Storridge Church, An Historical Tour

The lights in the nave

There are a total of seven oil lamps in the church, three in the nave and four in the chancel. This is another example of the theological symbolism found throughout the church. The New Testament book of Revelation refers to seven golden lampstands, representing the seven churches of Asia to which the revelation was sent (Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamos, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea), with ‘one like a Son of Man’ in their midst, whereas in the old testament (Exodus 25:31–40) God describes to Moses how to construct a lampstand (menorah) containing seven lamps (cups shaped like almond flowers with buds and blossoms).
